Situated at the corner of South Main and Vine Street in the heart of downtown Mount Vernon is America’s oldest authentic 19th century theater, the Woodward Opera House. Built in 1851 it occupies the third and fourth floors of a commercial building. Seeing this theater you can imagine a 19th century theater experience. This theater saw many entertainers in its time including, of course, Mount Vernon’s own Dan Emmett.
The restored Woodward Opera House is a part of the largest redevelopment project ever undertaken in the community. When completed the complex will consist of over 55,000 square feet of restored, renovated and new construction. Half of this space will be theater and theater-related; half in retail, other commercial and professional.
Come see and learn about this project. You can learn what we have learned about the 1885 layout of the theater, lobby and entranceways, see the preliminary plans for restoring the theater to its 19th century appearance and enabling its use with modern amenities, and see the preliminary plans for renovation of the rest of the Woodward and annex buildings for them to become a leading cultural and performing arts venue in central Ohio.
Visit the newly renovated first floor retail spaces now occupied by Sips Coffee House and Deli, and Paragraph’s Bookstore and step back into the 19th Century.
The Woodward Opera House will be open to the public four days during the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival.
