Chautauqua: Mark Twain, Paul Lynde, Victoria Woodhull and Jesse James
Friday, August 13
6:00 - 8:00 pm at ThePlace @ TheWoodward

The Chautauqua Series, sponsored by the music group Elixir, will be presenting four programs during the 2010 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival. The goal of the Chautauqua Series is to bring quality, family friendly programs that provide history beyond that found in text books, while encouraging and supporting the talent in the community.

At 6:00 pm, the program will feature Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain (a.k.a. Kenneth Barnett)! He had many mentors Ohio mentors including Fredericktown's Dan DeQuille. Hear the master storyteller, humorist, American icon, who will tell us, what else... stories.

Kenneth Barnett brings a world of experience to the stage. He has a MA in Theatre with emphasis on Theatrical Design from University of Akron; MS in Education & Curriculum Development from Mt. Vernon Nazarene University; BS in Elementary Education from OSU; Adjunct Instructor at Capital University; 21 years in secondary education; 40 years experience in all aspects of theatre (directing, design and acting); directed at the Renaissance Theatre, Mansfield Playhouse, Bucyrus Little Theater, Blackfork Players, OSU and Richland Academy; performs a one-man show The World According to Mark Twain since 1977 throughout Ohio and the Midwest.

At 6:30 pm, Mount Vernon’s own Paul Lynde [a.k.a. Jim Stoner] relates his many up and downs in show business, life in Mount Vernon, Hollywood Squares, Charlette’s Web, and who could forget him on Bewitched? Come and Jim Stoner will bring the life of Lynde to us as never heard before.

Jim Stoner, aveteran Chautauqua performer, performed his Paul Lynde to a Standing Room Only audience in May. Jim was so believeable as Paul, during the Chautauqua radio interview held at WMVO before each event, the interviewer forgot she was actually interviewing Jim and not the real Paul Lynde. In the past, Jim has performed as Edgar Allen Poe, John Lennon and Johnny Appleseed and will be presenting Frank Sinatra August 26 as part of the regular Chautuaqua series.

At 7:00 pm, meet Victoria Woodhull [a.k.a. Susan Kahrl]. She was born Victoria Chaflin in Homer, Ohio. Successful business woman, occultist, suffragette, Wall Street Broker, newspaper owner, presidential candidate, free love advocate, women's rights leader. Find out the whole story.

Susan Kahrl well known for her many theatrical roles for the Mount Vernon Players and other theatrical company productions, as part of the Dante Sisters performing, as coordinator of the youth showcase at the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival as well as many other activities in and around Knox County. Victoria Woodhull is her first Chautauqua character and her presentation at the series in April drew rave reviews.

And at 7:30 pm, meet Jesse James [a.k.a. Mike Petee]. He was not a cowboy, nor a country singer, not even a TV personality. He WAS a Bushwacker, an outlaw, a terrorist, a bank and train robber – who never accepted the end of the war AND he was raised in Missouri to boot. Wait until you hear about his mom. Was she a character! Hero or a villain? You decide.

Mike Petee is the founder of the only year round Chautauqua series in the state of Ohio, held at ThePlace@TheWoodward every month. As one of the the founding member of the musical group Elixir, Mike has performed as various Chautuauqua characters over the years as well, including P.T. Barnum, Buffalo Bill and John Sherman. Mike is also the writer of the play "With Pen in Hand" - The Dan Emmett Story and the upcoming "We Gotta Leave M Laugh N" that includes Fredericktown native Dan DeQuille and his protege Mark Twain.
