The Dan Emmett Flower Show will be held during the 2010 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival. This show of organic arrangements will be held from August 13-15 at The Living Center, 201 North Main Street, Mount Vernon. The theme for the 2010 show is "Touring Our National Parks."

The Flower show has a total of 5 divisions. Each division contains several classes with different specifications on plant type or arrangement design and theme. All exhibits must be entered from 8:30 am to 11:00 am on Friday, August 13, at The Living Center. Judging will be at 1:00 pm. on Friday and arrangement must be picked up by 4:00 pm. on Sunday, August 15.

Horticulture Division

Section A Open to all adults.
Class 1. Any native Ohio wildflower NOT on the endangered or threatened list; one bloom, one spike or one spray. See OAGC Handbook, pp. 399-404.
Class 2. Marigolds, one spray, any variety, not disbudded with foliage attached.
Class 3. Grasses, three stems, not to exceed thirty inches in height.
Class 4. Small decorative sunflower, not to exceed eight inches across, one bloom, disbudded, with foliage attached.
Class 5. Container grown plants, pot not to exceed ten inches across, one plant per container, may be multiple stemmed.
Class 6. SPECIAL CLASS for The Living Center residents only. Container grown plant, pot not to exceed ten inches across, one plant per container, may be multiple stemmed.

Section B Juniors (age 19 and under)
Class 7. One spray, not disbudded with foliage attached.
Class 8. One spike not disbudded with foliage attached.
Class 9. One bloom, round form, disbudded with foliage attached.
Class 10. SPECIAL CLASS Container grown plant, one plant per container, pot not to exceed ten inches across, may be multiple stemmed.

Artistic Division

Section C Open to all adult amateurs, any individual, garden club members, professionals, judges or student judges.
Class 11. SPECIAL CLASS My Favorite National Park. An interpretative design. Explain on a 3 x 5 card.
Class 12. Denali National Park, AK. Home to highest mountain in North America.
A. Traditional vertical design.
B. Creative vertical design.
Class 13. Grand Canyon National Park, AZ. An intricate and colorful gorge.

  1. Traditional mass design. To be staged in front of mirrors.
  2. Creative mass design. To be staged in front of mirrors.

Class 14. Acadia National Park, ME. The first national park in the U.S. to receive sunlight each day. An illuminary design. An illuminary design is a creative design incorporating light(s) as one of the components. The lighting must be an integral part of the design. Mechanics such as wires, batteries, etc. must be concealed. Lights may be battery or electric (outlets are available). See OAGC Handbook p. 366.
Class 15. Glacier National Park, MT. Glacier lakes reflect magnificent scenery. A reflective design. A reflective design is a creative design that contains some components to involve the viewer through the use of reflection. One or more of the components must reflect light, motion or image and involve the viewer in some manner. Brilliant light is important. See OAGC Handbook p. 370.

Section D Open to amateurs, individuals or garden club members only
Class 16. Yellowstone National Park, WY. World’s most extraordinary geysers and hot springs. A design featuring warm colors.
Class 17. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN. Ridges upon ridges of mixed forest. An all foliage design.
Class 18. SPECIAL CLASS Cuyahoga Valley National Park, OH. Preserves and reclaims the rural landscapes. A design using native Ohio flowers, grasses, trees and/or shrubs.
Class 19. Rocky Mountain National Park, CO. Upheavals, volcanic eruptions and glacial scourings. A design incorporating rocks.
Class 20. Everglades National Park, FL. A slowly moving river through sawgrass. A design featuring water.

Section E Juniors (age 19 and under). Please list age on entry tag.
Class 21 A. Ages 12 and under. Mammoth Cave National Park, KY. World’s largest known cave system. A design incorporating rocks.
Class 21 B. Ages 13-19. Mammoth Cave National Park, KY. World’s largest known cave system. A design incorporating rocks.
Class 22 A. Ages 12 and under. Shenandoah National Park, VA. Spectacular wilderness vistas. An all foliage design.
Class 22 B. Ages 13-19. Shenandoah National Park, VA. Spectacular wilderness vistas. An all foliage design.
