The Dan Emmett Flower Show will be held during the 2008 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival. This show of organic arrangements will be held from August 8-10 at The Living Center, 201 North Main Street, Mount Vernon. The theme for the 2008 show is “Going for the Gold ”
The Flower show has a total of 5 divisions. Each division contains several classes with different specifications on plant type or arrangement design and theme. All exhibits must be entered from 8:30 am to 11:00 am on Friday, August 8, at The Living Center. Judging will be at 1:00 pm. on Friday and arrangement must be picked up by 4:00 pm. on Sunday, August 10.

Horticulture Division
Section A Open to All Adults. | |
Class 1. | Zinnias, any variety, one bloom over 3 inches, disbudded with foliage attached. |
Class 2. | Marigolds, one spray, any variety, not disbudded with foliage attached. |
Class 3. | Grasses, three stems, not to exceed thirty inches in height. |
Class 4. | Small decorative sunflower, not to exceed eight inches across, one bloom, disbudded with foliage attached. |
Class 5. | Container grown plants, pot not to exceed ten inches across, one plant per container, may be multiple stemmed. |
Class 6. | SPECIAL CLASS - for The Living Center residents only. Container grown plant, pot not to exceed ten inches across, one plant per container, can be multiple stemmed. |
Section B Juniors (Age 19 and under) | |
Class 7. | One spray, not disbudded, with foliage attached. |
Class 8. | One spike, not disbudded, with foliage attached. |
Class 9. | One bloom, round form, disbudded with foliage attached. |

Section C OPEN to all amateurs, any individual, garden club members, professionals, judges or student judges | |
Class 11. | Olympic Games—A creative design featuring one or more rings. |
Class 12. | Olympic Flame—Illuminary design. An illuminary design is a creative design incorporating light(s) as one of the components. The lighting must be an integral part of the design. Mechanics such as wires, batteries, etc. must be concealed or an integral part of the design. Lights may be battery powered or powered by electricity (outlets are available). See OAGC Handbook p. 366. |
Class 13. | Sports Equipment—An interpretative design that includes item of summer Olympics sports equipment, either actual or a replica. The equipment does not need to be full size. Explain design on 3 x 5 card. |
Class 14. | SPECIAL CLASS Gymnastics—A mobile incorporating fresh and/or dried plant material. A mobile is an abstract 3-D moving sculpture, with movable parts, which are set in motion by currents of air. See OAGC Handbook, p. 367. To be staged in front of mirrors. Class 19. | Gold Medal—A small design not to exceed 10” overall. To be staged on platforms provided by the show committee. |
Class 20. | Sailing—A design showing water. |

Rules
General
- All exhibits to be entered between 8:30 & 11:00 am, Friday, August 8 at The Living Center, 201 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, Ohio.
- Judging will begin with the Junior entries at 1:00 pm by the OAGC standard system. Judge’s decisions are final. Judging is open to show participants only.
- The show will be open to the public on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, Saturday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
- All entries are to be removed starting at 4:00 pm on Sunday. If you cannot claim your entries at that time, please make other arrangements.
Horticulture Exhibits
- Open to all gardeners. The exhibitor must grow all horticulture exhibits.
- Exhibitor's name and address must be on entry tag. Juniors add age also.
- Horticulture exhibits should be in clear glass containers of proper size.
- Container plants must be in exhibitor's possession for at least three months.
- Only two entries per class per exhibitor. Each must be a different variety and all exhibits must be named as to variety.
- Committee reserves the right to combine or subdivide classes as needed to insure a uniform show.
Artistic Designs
- Classes 11-15 Open to any adult, amateur, individual, garden club member, professional, judge or student judge. Classes 16-20 AMATEURS ONLY, any individual or garden club member.
- Exhibitor’s name and address must be on entry tag. A 3X5 card must accompany each design listing all plant material used. An interpretation card may be included with any design.
- Exhibitors may make only one entry per class.
- Preference will be given to roadside and garden grown flowers.
- No artificial plant material may be used. Painted dry material is permitted in all classes except 15, 17, 18, 20. No fresh material may be painted or artificially colored. Accessories are permitted in any class but must be incorporated into the design.
- All artistic classes will be staged on open tables covered with gold plastic. Class 14 will be staged in front of mirrors.
- Designs are to be staged under the direction of the placement committee. Caution will be exercised but the committee will not be responsible for breakage, theft or loss of property.
Awards
Ribbons and premiums will be awarded:
1st place - $3.00
2nd place - $2.00
3rd place - $3.00
All participants will receive a $10.00 gift certificate from Glass Gardens Greenhouse. “Best of Show” will be given in each Section (A, B, C, D, E) at $10.00 each. One “Judge’s Award” of $10.00 will be given in Section C or D. “People’s Choice” will be announced on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
